What inspired the song?

Rain fell from the sky one day moments after I got the car washed. It wasn’t supposed to rain. I’m really careful about NEVER saying, “Just my luck,” when something bad or annoying happens because that shit becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. But you can’t help feeling it sometimes, even if you’re good about not verbalizing it. So it started raining that day and I just thought a guy who gets rained on every time he gets his car washed would make a could song. It was actually originally built around that line and was called, “Just Got the car washed,” for a while. But then I expanded on the idea.

Is there a significance behind the song title?

It’s the way this guy feels about his life all the time. Forgotten. We all feel that way sometimes. And we all feel like we’re, “the” person — the only person that is forgotten. And he feels trapped. He’s not committed to life being this way, and he even tries the path of gratitude, but even that doesn’t work out for him, so you end up having a lot of empathy for the poor bastard, which, of course, leads you to have a lot of empathy for yourself—that part of yourself that’s like him sometimes."

Do you have an interesting story about the songwriting process?

Tony Garnier plays bass. He’s wonderful. He’s Bob Dylan’s music director. Soozie Tyrell plays fiddle - she’s an old friend and Springsteen’s main girl for fiddle.

What are three descriptors/adjectives that best describe the emotion or melody in this song?

Empathetic, humorous, clever.

Can you provide context around the visuals associated with this song, including any artwork or video? Notable photographer, director or cast?

It’s just me on camera for the whole video, looking like a sad sack, with three appearances by a poor guy pushing his broken down car down the road.

Do you have a favorite lyric from this track that you’d like to highlight? Why is that significant to you?

“”til death do us part, is a very sweet thought, but her lips are always moving and I never get to talk, and she don’t say nothin’, but she says it a lot, I’m the man that fortune forgot.”

What is one key point that makes this song unique?

It don’t take itself too seriously.
