Pieces

What inspired the song?

The death of an old neighbor named Sue, whose son, John, was my best friend growing up.

Is there a significance behind the song title?

“Pieces” are what make up the whole of us. Every time someone we love dies, or an era passes, some piece of us goes with them or with that. In that sense, death doesn’t; occurs all at once in a final moment. Parts of us are dying as we go on living, and when the moment of passing finally comes, there may not actually be that much of us left anymore.

What is one key point that makes this song unique?

Its perspective on the nature of death and passing.

What are three descriptors/adjectives that best describe the emotion or melody in this song?

Tender, emotional, wise.

Do you have an interesting story about the songwriting or recording process? If yes, elaborate. Please highlight any noteworthy collaborators.

See below, on the album overall.

What were the certain stylistic/production choices you made and why?

It’s an ensemble recording. I wanted it to feel real, natural, not self-consciously recorded and not like it was recorded alone.

Do you have a favorite lyric from this track?

“A heart can be broken just so many times, between what precedes and receives us. Won’t be that much of me left for goodbyes. I feel like I’m leaving in pieces."

What lesson did you take away from writing this song?

Stay close to your heart.

Is there a mission statement or certain core themes prevalent in all of your songs? Any guiding principles that inform your music?

That life is an awesome, unknowable mystery, and that reality is what binds us together as human beings.

Does your main drive come from musical exploration or lyrical exploration? Both?

Lyrics more than music.
