MOVING DAY

What inspired the song?

My three kids are headed off to college next year, and it puts me in a melancholy mood, thinking about my husband and I becoming empty nesters. It got me thinking about when we bought our house, an antique colonial farmhouse in a bucolic town, and a spring day after we’d moved in when the lilacs were blooming, the kids were five, and the swings was brand spanking new. How quickly that time went by.

Is there a significance behind the song title?

It’s literal.

What is one key point that makes this song unique?

I don't know of any other songs about selling the house you raised your family in, and the deeply existential sadness it inspires.

Do you have an interesting story about the songwriting or recording process?

Marc Muller plays lap steel. Marc is best known for his contributions to Bruce Springsteen’s work.

Favorite lyrics?

“Seems like yesterday that we bought the place, and your fingers touched a younger face."

What were the certain stylistic/production choices you made and why?

There’s a rhythm guitar part that inspired the original writing. That’s the backbone of the song and we kept it that way, even though the piano, lap steel, drum loops, bass and strings bring a lot of energy to the piece.

How does this song make you feel?

Sad, but hopeful that the love you started out with is still alive, and can and will survive the most difficult life transitions.
